Influence is an action that must be proactively pursued. This can only be accomplished by effectively engaging others with a plan and a concrete objective.
The Science of Problem Solving
Leadership requires competence in the science of problem solving. To solve problems effectively, a leader must be able to:
1) Analyze results, opportunties and challenges
2) Prioritize actions by their probable costs and returns
3) Execute the right actions with the right focus
Analyze
Finding root causes, likelihoods of influencing causes or creating new causes, uncovering themes, creating feedback loops are first steps towards effective problem solving.
Prioritize
Leadership is a practice of managing limited time, focus and resources to maximize effectiveness. Choosing the right things to focus on is perhaps the most essential skill of a leader.
Execute
Execution requires organization, focus, resource allocation and cosistent follow up. It ought to link analysis and prioritization with desired results.
A leader's competence is revealed by the efficiency of their problem solving and the effectivness of their influence.
